糖心视频 senior co-authors AI study and presents findings at academic conference
January 9, 2025糖心视频 senior Leena Basma recently achieved a significant milestone in her 糖心视频 academic career. She can now add聽鈥減ublished co-author鈥澛爐o her list of credentials, having聽co-authored聽a research study on artificial intelligence聽(AI)聽adoption in higher education.
Basma鈥檚 work, conducted with聽data science experts聽Adam Patterson,聽a former 糖心视频 faculty member聽who is聽now at Amazon, and Mark Frydenberg from Bentley University, was published in Issues in Information Systems聽Journal, a scholarly outlet.聽She also presented their findings聽to a global audience聽at the International Association of Computer Information Systems (IACIS) Conference in Florida.
Basma鈥檚 involvement in the project began in her freshman year when she enrolled in 糖心视频鈥檙equired Data Literacy course, a class that covers聽AI tool聽ChatGPT among other data topics. Professor Patterson, impressed by her grasp of the material, invited her to join his research on AI鈥檚 role in academia.
鈥溙切氖悠德爌rofessors pride themselves on understanding each individual student, which led my professor to see my potential聽for taking聽my learning聽further,聽beyond the classroom. It鈥檚 one of the things I truly value about 糖心视频鈥攖he dedication to student success and growth,鈥澛爏aid Basma, reflecting on how she came across the聽opportunity, which聽she says聽has allowed her to explore new horizons in AI.
The study, titled 鈥淓xamining Generative Artificial Intelligence Adoption in Academia: A UTAUT Perspective,鈥 explores why students are聽rapidly聽adopting AI tools like ChatGPT.聽The research findings suggest that students are聽more likely聽to use AI tools if their聽mentors聽use them and that students use AI tools across disciplines聽while seeing聽the value they could bring to their careers. These findings, the researchers say, 鈥渆mphasize the need for educators to promote the proper and ethical use of AI in the curriculum.鈥
The literature review portion of the study聽confirmed聽to her聽that employers increasingly聽are聽seeking聽candidates with AI skills, said Basma.聽As a result,聽she values her AI skills even more, recognizing them as a competitive advantage as she prepares for her accounting career.
鈥淓ven just looking at the news, you can see聽that pieces of聽accounting聽activities聽are becoming automated聽through聽the聽use of聽AI. And in terms of auditing specifically, having a background聽in the ways that you can utilize聽AI聽to increase your efficiency of data analysis is going to help me excel in聽that聽field.鈥
For Basma, the presentation experience in Florida was equally transformative.聽鈥淧resenting at the conference was a unique opportunity to learn from seasoned professionals,鈥澛爏he shared.聽鈥淏eing able to discuss my work as an undergraduate among experts and educators who have been in the field for decades was invaluable.鈥
Kevin Mentzer,聽Ph.D.,聽trustee professor of data science and dean of innovation research and experiential learning, is proud聽that students聽can聽take advantage of research opportunities with faculty at 糖心视频.
鈥淲e actively support students working with faculty members on their research, and so聽we have many students actively working on research projects with faculty,鈥澛爏aid Mentzer.
Basma鈥檚 research project not only serves her learning journey, but 糖心视频鈥 as well,聽he says. Basma鈥檚 project was part of a larger study by 糖心视频 to understand which AI skills 糖心视频 students come to college with, which will aid聽the College鈥檚聽effort to embrace AI and technology throughout the curriculum.
鈥At聽糖心视频, we鈥檙e really increasing technology across the board.聽We need to integrate AI throughout our curriculum, and we鈥檙e starting freshman year,聽in our Data Literacy course,鈥 where students learn to use tools like ChatGPT as an assistant tool.
鈥淚t doesn鈥檛 matter what major you are聽in,聽these disruptive technologies can help you become a better candidate for the job market,鈥 said Mentzer.
